APAC Procurement Adapts to Trade, Tech, and Green Demands

The procurement sector across the Asia Pacific and Oceania regions is currently operating within a multifaceted environment, shaped by shifting global trade winds, an increasing emphasis on ecological responsibility, the swift integration of digital solutions, and a persistent need for robust supply chains. While a temporary lull in US-China trade tensions has offered some immediate stability, the fundamental uncertainties necessitate a strategic and flexible approach to procurement practices.

Trade Dynamics Offer Short-Term Relief, Long-Term Uncertainty Persists

The recent easing of trade friction between the United States and China has provided a welcome, albeit potentially short-lived, period of reduced pressure on procurement activities in the region. According to a recent analysis by Maersk, global ocean container trade maintained solid momentum in early 2025, with Far East Asia remaining a key driver of export growth. However, new tariff regimes and market uncertainty are beginning to reshape customer behaviour and cargo flows.

“While the temporary de-escalation in US-China trade tensions is a positive sign, procurement professionals must remain vigilant,” states Mr. Li Qiang, a Senior Trade Analyst. “The underlying structural issues driving the trade conflict remain, and businesses should continue to diversify their supply chains to mitigate potential future disruptions.”

Data from The Diplomat indicates that despite recent talks, the core dynamics of the China-U.S. conflict are unlikely to change significantly. Washington’s concerns over China’s industrial advancements persist, and the U.S. post-industrial economy remains heavily reliant on global supply chains where China plays a critical role.

Sustainability Takes Center Stage in Procurement Strategies

A significant trend across Asia Pacific and Oceania is the growing commitment to sustainability within procurement. Governments and industry leaders are increasingly prioritizing environmentally conscious practices, signaling a long-term shift towards greener supply chains.

“Sustainability is no longer a peripheral consideration but a core tenet of modern procurement,” emphasizes Ms. Ayaka Matsuno, Director of Social Innovation Program. “Businesses that proactively integrate environmental and social responsibility into their procurement processes will not only contribute to a healthier planet but also gain a competitive advantage.”

Several governments in the region are implementing strategic roadmaps, eco-labeling initiatives, and fiscal incentives to promote sustainable public procurement. For instance, Japan and South Korea have mandatory green purchasing requirements, while China has established a comprehensive framework for environmentally responsible production and circular economy practices.

Digital Transformation Revolutionizes Procurement Processes

The rapid adoption of digital technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), is poised to revolutionize procurement processes in Asia Pacific and Oceania. These tools offer the potential to enhance efficiency, improve decision-making, and create more resilient supply chains.

“AI and other digital solutions are no longer futuristic concepts but essential tools for navigating the complexities of modern procurement,” asserts Mr. Sim Jian Min, CEO of SourceSage. “From predictive analytics to supplier relationship management, these technologies are empowering procurement teams to operate more strategically and effectively.”

PwC’s 2024 Digital Procurement Survey for Asia Pacific reveals that a significant 70% of companies in the region aim to have digitized their procurement functions by 2027. This drive towards digitalization is fueled by the need for improved internal and external performance, including enhanced cost control and greater supply chain visibility.

Ambitious Projects Drive Procurement Opportunities

Significant investments and ambitious projects across various sectors, including infrastructure, technology, energy, and defense, are creating substantial procurement opportunities throughout Asia Pacific and Oceania.

“The scale of development across our region presents a wealth of opportunities for procurement professionals,” notes Mr. Andrew Cannon-Brookes, Head of Supply Chain Management. “From large-scale infrastructure projects to cutting-edge technology deployments, strategic procurement will be crucial in ensuring the successful delivery of these initiatives.”

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is actively supporting infrastructure development in the Pacific region through initiatives like the Pacific Quality Infrastructure Principles, which emphasize social inclusion, environmental sustainability, and economic viability in procurement processes.

Navigating the Future: Agility and Information are Key

Despite the positive developments and opportunities, procurement professionals in Asia Pacific and Oceania must remain agile and well-informed. Monitoring the evolving regulatory landscape and the ongoing impact of global geopolitical events will be critical for effectively navigating challenges and capitalizing on emerging opportunities.

“In this dynamic environment, continuous learning and adaptability are paramount,” concludes Ms. Mrinalini Venkatachalam, Regional Director – Southeast Asia, North Asia and Oceania. “Procurement professionals who stay abreast of the latest trends, technologies, and regulations will be best positioned to drive value and resilience for their organizations.”

The Supply Chain Asia Procurement Forum 2025, scheduled for later this month, will provide a platform for industry leaders to discuss these critical trends and strategies for navigating the future of procurement in the region.
