The central role of the Papua New Guinea Science and Technology Council is to provide policy advice to the Government on issues relating to research, science, and technology. The Council also provides Research and Development Grants to support research and development in science, engineering and technology in Papua New Guinea. Particular focus is given to universities and research institutions already involved in Research and Development activities that can provide solutions and develop products to improve the quality of life for Papua New Guineans.
The Papua New Guinea Science and Technology Council and Secretariat is mandated to support scientific research and innovation that are relevant to Papua New Guinea’s development needs and priorities.

The National Research Agenda identifies research priorities to direct research funding. The four (4) Priority Areas or Programs for funding in 2026 include:
Call for Proposal
This Call for Proposal invites researchers from universities, research institutions and Non-Government Organizations to submit proposals on any one of the four broad research programs. Proposals must be presented using the PNG Science and Technology Council and Secretariat Grant Application form, copy of which is forwarded with specific details of the call to the respective Vice Chancellors and Head of Institutions. Grant Applications should be submitted with the approval of the Vice Chancellor or Head of Institution to the Secretariat in the form of two hard copies or a soft copy (in Word or PDF format) to the following address:
